CO2 Sequestration: Greece is a pioneer in the fight against Climate Change

By Alexandros Zacharopoulos*

They can give a huge boost to exploitation of the Greek soil, the new carbon dioxide capture technologies, as well as the hydrogen production technologies in the battle against her climatic change.

Through his actions new modern climate law, the energy and climatic policies decisions of EE, and the relevant decisions resulting from its meeting COP26, Greece because of the ideal geology of for these innovative uses - as well as because of the dozens saline structures and basalts masses which are in its subsoil-, is endowed and can be driven to explosive growth with the new emerging blue-water business sector of CO2 sequestration throughout the territory and where we exercise sovereign rights. At the same time, many will be created new ones seats work in the Greek Region.

Blue and green hydrogen

The opportunity is very great for parallel exploitation of our Greek soil for the carbonization and the viable development of the environment helping with yet another strong geopolitical displacement, with the friendships and synergies we can create based on positive advanced agenda of reversing climate change and cheap ones solutions that we can offer towards the resolution of this major issue.

The MINISTRY OF and the government must and can politically manage the opportunity that our subsoil gives for the CO2 sequestration, to study and issue within a timetable related to the conditions of the grants from the Cash desk Recovery, quickly and with leadership, through him super fund/TAIPED (and the contribution where necessary from EDAW), the tender documents and the relevant data needed by the energy and technological companies, so that they can make their suggestions and become relevant contests for assignments/concessions.

They are obviously needed indicative studies cost-benefit/feasibility for the uses of the Greek subsoil and of each low-enthalpy geothermal field (why not our high ones too) and the energy production potential that can be practically related to the new emerging technologies of CO2 capture and production blue and green hydrogen using our geothermal energy.

An advantage for our country

Obviously, there will be others RES which we must always link to the cost and potential of each of them emerging innovative technologies. This also applies to the non-mature RES since the diversification energy needs, geographical and environmental impacts as well as the unbound production potential they provide per infrastructure, are rapidly evolving. Therefore it may well create significant techno-innovative synergies and opportunities for the competitiveness of the Greek economy.

New technological CO2 capture solutions give us an advantage, since we have an ideal endowment in our subsoil for similar ones carbon dioxide spills to the underground formations, in which CO2 naturally ends up over time anyway. It is particularly important that the formations and the uses of CO2 sequestration are not competitive, but complementary to the business actions related to it mining natural gas.

Part of the solution to climate change

We with them new emerging technologies of carbon dioxide sequestration within formations beneath saline structures and the production of blue and green hydrogen, along with our ideal geothermal underground structures, we become part of the solution and response to the destructive and dangerous problems brought about by climatic change on our planet. So time for action for the Ministry of Energy and our energy companies to take the lead in these new technologies and create a new industry in Greek business quiver us for the Greece 2.0 we want.
